Early Life and Education
Martha Journey Maureen Lee was born into a humble family in the rural village of Moyamba, Sierra Leone, in 1966. Despite facing immense challenges, she displayed an extraordinary determination and thirst for knowledge from a young age. With limited access to education in her village, she often traveled long distances to attend school.
Lee's passion for education led her to pursue higher studies in the United States, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington. Later, she obtained a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Awakening to the Need for Social Justice
While working as a nurse in underserved communities both in the US and Sierra Leone, Lee witnessed firsthand the disproportionate impact of poverty, disease, and lack of opportunity on marginalized populations. This ignited within her a deep-seated desire to create systemic change.
