Crazy Horse was a legendary Lakota warrior who led the Native American resistance against the United States government in the 19th century. He was a skilled warrior and a gifted strategist, and he played a key role in several major battles, including the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Crazy Horse was also a deeply spiritual man, and he believed that the Lakota people had a sacred duty to protect their land and way of life.
Early Life and Education
Crazy Horse was born in 1840 near the Black Hills in what is now South Dakota. His father was a Lakota warrior, and his mother was a Cheyenne woman. Crazy Horse was given the name Tashunka Witko, which means "crazy horse" in Lakota. He was a sickly child, and he was often left alone to play in the wilderness. As he grew older, Crazy Horse became a skilled hunter and warrior. He was also a gifted artist, and he often drew pictures of the animals and landscapes that he saw around him.
In 1866, Crazy Horse witnessed the Fetterman Massacre, in which a group of Lakota warriors led by Red Cloud ambushed and killed 81 U.S. soldiers. This event had a profound impact on Crazy Horse, and it helped to convince him that the Lakota people needed to fight for their land and way of life.
The Battle of the Little Bighorn
In 1876, Crazy Horse joined forces with Sitting Bull and other Lakota leaders to fight against the U.S. Army in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Crazy Horse led a group of warriors in a surprise attack on the U.S. Army's 7th Cavalry Regiment, which was led by General George Custer. The attack was a complete success, and the U.S. Army was routed. Crazy Horse's victory at the Battle of the Little Bighorn was one of the most significant victories in Native American history.
Later Life and Death
After the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Crazy Horse continued to fight against the U.S. government. He was captured in 1877 and imprisoned at Fort Robinson in Nebraska. Crazy Horse died in 1877 at the age of 37, after he was stabbed by a U.S. Army guard.
Legacy
Crazy Horse is considered one of the greatest Native American warriors in history. He was a skilled warrior, a gifted strategist, and a deeply spiritual man. Crazy Horse's legacy continues to inspire Native Americans today, and he is remembered as a symbol of resistance and courage.
In 1941, Crazy Horse was honored with a memorial on Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. The memorial is a colossal sculpture of Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, and Chief Joseph. The Crazy Horse Memorial is still under construction, but when it is completed, it will be the largest sculpture in the world.
